Aside from a facelift and other facial plastic surgery procedures, there are powerful non-surgical cosmetic options available to correct skin flaws, improve the quality of skin, and reduce signs of aging. BOTOX® is consistently found to be the most popular treatment for facial rejuvenation, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of moderate to severe aging and frown lines. In fact, BOTOX® is the No. 1 minimally invasive treatment in the United States year to year.

Specifically, the injectable cosmetic is intended to eliminate facial lines and wrinkles that are more apparent than mere creases in the skin. The injectable is comprised of botulinum toxin, which paralyzes the targeted muscles to prevent them from contracting and creating furrows or other dynamic wrinkles.

BOTOX® has been on the market for more than 15 years, and has proven to be extremely safe and effective. Aside from wrinkle reduction, it can also be used to safely halt hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) under the arms and on the hands.

BOTOX® is introduced into the problem area via injection. A typical patient may feel some minimal discomfort from the shots, but today’s needles are thin and fine to reduce discomfort. A small amount is injected superficially into the crows feet to help reduce the appearance of eye bags and “smile lines.” By injecting BOTOX® into the sweat glands, excessive under arm or hand perspiration can be also be treated effectively.

BOTOX® can improve:

  • Crow’s Feet (at the corners of the eye)
  • Forehead Lines
  • Frown Lines (between the eyebrows)
  • Hyperhidrosis

Depending on the extent of treatment, a BOTOX® injection session can take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour. Patients typically see the full result from their injections in three to seven days. After three to four months, a repeat treatment will be required to maintain maximum benefits. There is evidence that regular injections essentially “train” muscles to relax, leading to longer-lasting results over time, as well as smoother skin even if injections are eventually discontinued.

It is important to have a good idea of the capabilities of BOTOX®. That being said, non-surgical options like BOTOX® and dermal fillers do not reduce wrinkles and signs of aging to the extent that a traditional facelift can. Dr. Davidson will discuss the best cosmetic treatment plan for you during your consultation. Having reasonable expectations is important, as BOTOX® can successfully treat many problem areas, but not all.

While many types of physicians and non-physicians offer BOTOX® and non-surgical cosmetic fillers, patients should be very careful to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Davidson has excellent credentials and experience, is board-certified, and will educate patients about the different products available on the market. He will also explain in detail the side effects and realistic results one can expect after the surgery.

The Ideal Patient for BOTOX®

Injectables are safe and effective for any skin type and ethnicity, as well as for both men and women. The ideal candidate for a treatment with BOTOX® or a dermal filler will be someone who is in generally good health, understands the procedure, and holds reasonable expectations for the results. A consultation with Dr. Davidson will be scheduled to discuss all injectable options, as well as other noninvasive and surgical techniques. A long-term plan for facial rejuvenation will then be created.

BOTOX® and Men

While women make up the bulk of patients who choose BOTOX®, men represent a growing demographic interested in maintaining a more refreshed look. Dr. Christopher Davidson understands the unique features of the male face, as well as masculine aesthetic considerations that guide his approach and technique.

Often, men want to appear well-rested and healthy as opposed to overall smooth-skinned and outright younger. The idea of leaving a few wrinkles as indication of life experience and authority may appeal to some patients, though Dr. Davidson will work with each person who comes to him seeking help to tailor the procedure to his or her personal goals.

BOTOX® Cost

BOTOX® is priced by the area treated, and each treatment session varies in the number of units necessary to achieve the patient’s desired results. Overall cost is determined by how much of the product is needed, which depends on the location and purpose of the injections, whether they are intended to smooth away unwanted wrinkles or prevent excessive sweating.

Dr. Davidson will discuss treatment cost with you during your consultation. You can also learn more about the Brilliant Distinctions® program:

The BOTOX® Procedure

Injectables do not require any pretreatment or preparation on the part of the patient. The procedure will take less than an hour, and many treatments can even be completed in 30 minutes or less.

BOTOX® is virtually painless. Once the targeted area has been determined, the provider will inject the cosmetic under the skin with a tiny needle.

Patients are free to return to their usual activities the same afternoon.

What to Expect After a BOTOX® Session

BOTOX® does not require any downtime; patients can expect some mild redness and swelling immediately after their treatment, but can resume work or school the same day. Light bruising and slight bleeding are also common, but these should resolve over the first few days. While rare, more serious side effects, such as facial asymmetry or nerve damage, can occur, patients should always choose an experienced provider to ensure they receive safe, satisfying results. Some results are typically noticeable within a few days, but the BOTOX® effects should continue to improve in the following weeks.

BOTOX® Quality

There are other botulinum-based injectables used to smooth wrinkles, but Dr. Davidson uses only BOTOX® made by Allergan. The company is known for reliable, quality products, including the Juvéderm® dermal filler line, Natrelle® breast implants, and the eyelash-lengthening prescription cosmetic Latisse®.

BOTOX® is most popularly known for its cosmetic application, as well as its growing use in treating hyperhidrosis. The injectable’s reputation extends far beyond these options, too, encompassing a wide range of medical uses that further indicate its safety and efficacy. Doctors around the United States and world frequently use it to calm spastic muscles, relieve chronic migraine pain, prevent incontinence, and more.

Dr. Davidson uses BOTOX® to treat only wrinkles and excessive sweating at his Boston-area practice, though he will be happy to discuss the injectable’s safety profile, ongoing record of successful global applications, and more with any patient who has questions and wants to learn more.

Combining BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers

There are two basic options when it comes to injectables. To treat dynamic wrinkles, there is botulinum toxin, most popularly used in BOTOX®.

Dermal fillers work best to improve static wrinkles, or those caused by a loss of tissue elasticity, as well as a loss of facial volume. Areas with diminishing facial volume, such as along the cheeks and jawline, can make the face look hollow and unhealthy. This may be the result of aging, genetics, illness, or a dramatic weight loss. Dermal fillers can replenish this lost volume, restoring a youthful contour to the features.

Dr. Davidson offers popular dermal fillers such as Juvéderm®, Perlane®, Radiesse®, Restylane®, and Sculptra®.

Both types of injectables—BOTOX® and fillers—can be used alone or in conjunction with each other. Injectables work well when combined with a variety of noninvasive and surgical techniques, providing optimal results.

More Than BOTOX® in Boston

Patients who enjoy the wrinkle-free look of BOTOX®, but who would like the longer-lasting results typical of surgery, can consider a brow lift, which tightens skin and re-contours tissue in the forehead to create a more youthful look. Eyelid surgery, known as blepharoplasty, focuses less on wrinkles around the eyes and more on removing pouches of fat and correcting lax skin that droops and creates a tired look.

A facelift typically addresses sagging on the lower half of the face, giving the cheeks and jawline more definition. Some patients choose to pair facelift surgery with BOTOX® injections and other treatments to get an overall rejuvenated look.

Dr. Davidson will assess you as an individual, working first to understand your aesthetic goals and then suggesting which cosmetic options are best able to deliver results that will leave you satisfied with your rejuvenated look.
